New Delhi: Meta-owned WhatsApp said it banned more than 79 lakh accounts in India in March. Between March 1 and 31, 7,954,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned and more than 1,430,000 accounts were actively banned even before any user reports.

Currently, the messaging platform has over 500 million users in India. In March, it received 12,782 complaint reports from across the country and took action on 11 of them. We are responding to all complaints received where a complaint is deemed to be a repeat of previous cases, the company said. “We have formed a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers and experts in law enforcement, online security, etc. to ensure user safety,” the company said.
